‘Dear Evan Hansen, today is going to be an amazing day……..’*

This is a line taken from a musical I recently saw. Evan was encouraged by his therapist to write a letter to himself daily, filled with positivity. Evan is a 17 year old boy in his last years at high school, he has social anxiety and depression, and is struggling to find his place in the world.

As the story unfolds (and I don’t want to give you any spoilers if you haven’t seen it), there are 2 very different boys from very different families, each with their own story to tell, if only someone would hear them. Almost like an onion, there are layers to this story that give it so much depth. The pain hiding behind what looks like a perfect life, and the struggles to make life the best that it can be.

Listening over and over to the song that is most well known from the film and stage show, I was trying to find an appropriate lyric as inspiration for this blog, but there are too many. It’s a song about loneliness and despair, but it also encourages the listener that there is always hope, that there is always someone there.

Sometimes it takes something or someone, to help to make sense of all the jumble of emotions that make us all the people we are. Life will bring us challenges and positive experiences on a daily basis (and sometimes we miss the positives because the things that challenge us overwhelm the positives), but we are not 2 dimensional, we are made of many layers and experiences that shape us to be the person that we are today.

Sometimes it just takes someone to hear you, to listen without judgement, opinion or advice, someone to say I get it.

Evan found his way, not the exactly the life that was mapped out, one that took a slight diversion. He was able to stand tall again and find his own peace and acceptance. And I think for me that is where much of it lies. We can struggle against the odds, we can strive for something better, but first we need to find out who we really are, accept all that we are, and move forward from there. There is always a place for everyone.

So let the sun come streaming in 'cause you'll reach up and you'll rise again Lift your head and look around
